David carries out a project in 1784 and chose as the theme to represent an episode of Roman history in which the virtues emerge homelands. In the age of King Tullius Ostilio (seventh century. A. C.), as told by Livy, Rome was engaged in a war against Alba Longa. How to end a war that has already lasted a long time? It is thought to entrust the fate of three brothers Roman's "Horace" and three brothers from Alba Longa, the "Curiazi.

David captures the moment before the collision and praises the virtues of warriors with the "oath" of children on the sword that his father offers. Places the actors in a theatrical scene. The geometric structure only to the Father and the central location brings together, even with a play of light, the look on swords, a symbol of redemption of the homeland. The position carried a strong body and shifted to the left highlights the motto: "O Fatherland or death" in a memento-of-civic virtues.

On the right and in the background, puts women stricken, perhaps the mother, sisters, the bride of a Curiatii, which had been promised.

What value then had family and love? Everything is postponed to the country, of which David wanted to capture the attachment and the central role in the educational context.

Art educates the people and is the fundamental contribution that the arts give to social progress in a sociological context.

The Arts interact and framework can inspire the music, this is the case of the composer Bernard Port, a friend of David, who composed the opera Les Horaces on the text by Pierre Corneille.
